Second-order systems introduce richer dynamic behavior than their first-order counterparts. Depending on the system parameters, the response may be sluggish, critically damped, oscillatory, or even unstable, providing a natural introduction to the concepts of damping, natural frequency, overshoot, and settling time.
This simulator provides a visual way to examine how these parameters shape the transient response and how apparently small changes in system dynamics can produce dramatically different behavior.
